This book hovered across my radar amongst other books suggested to me. Eventually I saw it recommended in a group I'm part of so decided to give it a go. So pleased I did. I discovered my new favourite author. Frankl is an exceptional talent, but beyond the writing, as a mother (and a human being that loves people), this story is one that pulled at my heartstrings in ways I've never felt before. Now onto my next Frankl book, which I'm devouring... VERY much recommended!
I found this book challenging, engaging and very thought provoking. It touches on a subject that I hadn’t thought very seriously about, as it hadn’t really ever touched my world. The characters (especially Rosie, Penn and Poppy/Claude) were very relatable and real. My mother’s heart broke for Poppy/Claude, but applauded how she faced each challenge. I’m not sure if this story reflects the real world, and I felt it did have a fairy tale feel about it, which I felt he author intended. A very good read indeed.
Beautifully written engaging and at times fun, at times sad and challenging. A wonderful whimsical story with stories within it, children are at its heart and parents love and attempts to do the best but not always succeed. A great way to both explain gender and it’s fluid breadth, and to entertain us with an amazing complex and delightful family.
Claude and Poppy are the two sides that so many young people encounter and have to work through. This story journeys through the topic of gender identification, and steps right into the challenging areas. A really good story that has opened my eyes to what some young people are journeying through.
Incredibly smart, loving, caring, funny family do the best it can in our crazy mixed up world, mixing fairy tales and reality in just the right measure to get through what life enevitibly does, throw you the unexpected.
I loved this book. I am a parent of primary and younger aged children and found this story heartbreaking but also inspiring and I am so glad that I’ve read it. Although fictional, it has educated me. Thank you.
