In the Foreward the Author writes: "These three horro stories are an hors d-oeuvre before the main course...." That caught my attention.
Story #1: Where Angels Come In - right from the first sentence the book moves into the theme of horror. The writing is well done, the ambiance well plotted through descriptions of scenery, characters and the background story, so that by the time the main chapters arrive, you are well-primed for a fright. Story #2: The Ancestors - this was creepy. It was hard to read where the story would go, you just knew it wouldn't be good. Story #3: Florrie - Adam Nevill, the author, definitely saved the best for last. Right from the beginning of this story, you feel uneasy. "Frank remembered his mother once saying, 'Houses give off a feeling,' ...." And the feeling just grows and grows.
I will definitely follow up on this author's other work.
What a delicious trilogy of truly creepy paranormal tales we have here; a perfect morsel to whet your appetite for Adam's upcoming collection of short stories "Some Will Not Sleep". This is the first works I've read by the author and his ability to create a story cloaked in eerieness (is that a word?) is obviously where his talent lays.
