An extraordinarily moving read. This is a searingly honest (both intentionally and unintentionally) political memoir. It records in painful detail the betrayal of the poor and dispossessed of Greece and indeed of all Europe by the oligarchs and the political elites that they own. It serves as an excellent precursor to an understanding of just where liberalism and neoliberalism has led in 2017/18. As an Australian, I have to say that Vourafakis and DiEM25 have given me a deeper understanding of where Noel Pearson may be coming from. Tamis deals with uncomfortable but important stuff. All power DiEM25.
Excellent book, written by a left wing educator tried to become a politician and protect the Greeks from an austerity being forced on them by avaricious Western European politicians and bankers, and failed. His moral: (probably) never trust a banker.
A superb expose’ of the machinations of power. Varoufakis shows how goodwill, honesty and brilliance are simply not enough when faced with banality of ass covering bureacracy, and beligerance. Once upon a time brilliant men were lauded, now they are beaten into submission.
I don't recall a political memoir that puts you in the room as lucidly as this one does.
Varoufakis recorded many of the conversations he recounts herein - a prudent precaution given the sheer bastardry of the forces arrayed against him, against Greece, and against democracy. That exactitude and clarity affords a better sense of what actually happens in the smoke-filled rooms of international finance and politics than any other account I can think of. Only William Manchester's accounts of Churchill's years in power provide the same realism and colour - though they were written about a subject who was long-dead. These guys are still with us, and still rigging the international system for their own advancement.
This is an insider's account of history, a demolition job of the neoliberal voodoo, and a revolutionary manual for dispelling the irrationality and perfidy that waft through the crumbling pillars of plutocracy.
