A very personal insight into just how tough and unfair our system can be. The law has a very simplistic view on punishment and I contend that it is actually criminal in itself that prisons still operate in archaic ways and do not rehabilitate, plus any consideration given by judges on consequential effects on family is superficial.
Lawyers & politicians are just not interested in doing anything about it. They jump when pressure is applied, just as the prison system did here - only when pressured.
It's a compelling read. There are so many facets to it. A real eye opener.
One big thing is the open door snapshot of conditions in our jails. The COs and the hardened inmates. The bureaucracy of the justice system. The reactions of people re: husband's incarceration.
The world gone crazy. I'm impressed with Mel getting the book published so soon after the events. My wife Colleen is chafing at the bit to get into it, Big events can change you and getting back what you had before seems never completely obtainable.
This is real people experiencing a real life Shawshank Redemption situation. We've known Mel & Patrick for quite some time.
His mental scars must still be raw. Living with constant fear for 2 years and trying to protect his wife from hearing the worst of it which could cause her to fret even more. Finding and healing the tears in your relationships especially Mel and Paddy. PTSD is a serious condition. I think Mel from her perspective gave a very real and raw account in describing what it all was doing to her and the children.
When Colleen and I were in Morocco nearly 40 years ago we had Midnight Express fresh in our minds and we got out of there unscathed after a few scares. There were many stories floating around about entrapment, with drugs being planted in your vehicle. We avoided Turkey altogether.
Maybe it's time for this book to go to film. Move over Rifki we've got NSW Correctional Service generating the same kind of hospitality.
Mel is a talented writer. I really enjoy her style of writing. I couldn't put the book down..
