Great companion to the movie...
6 July 2017
I really enjoyed the movie, so (did this the wrong way around) and then read the book. That being said, I very much enjoyed the book just as much as the movie as it gave a great deal more detail and depth to the incredible personal true story of the actual events that occurred when Captain Sully landed on the Hudson River in January 2009.
I wanted to learn about this extraordinary pilot and hear first hand the story about this remarkable landing from him. I particularly enjoyed the way he would intersperse the actual events of the flight into the Hudson River with the story of his own life. What is evident when reading this is Capt. Sullenberger's entire life actually prepared him to safely land a plane in the Hudson River on that cold winter's day.
He shares the stories of learning to fly as a teenager in a crop duster's airplane. He describes much of the knowledge he gained from serving as a fighter pilot and as a commercial airline pilot. He also shares memories from the private life he shares with his wife and two daughters. All help understand this calm, level headed, focussed man.
Despite all this 'training' ... I know you would still always wonder how you would behave in a life/death emergency (as did I when I was reading it) and Sully got the chance to find out in no uncertain terms. The description of the last minutes of the flight are second to none making use of the time stamps of the radio communications which literally made my heart race, I can't imagine what it would have been like to actually be in that cockpit.
A true story like this is so uplifting that you realise the Miracle on the Hudson was no fluke. Highly recommended... 5 Flying Stars!
