A beautifully character laden tale of a storied manuscript
5 January 2017
This is written as an overarching contemporary tale of a conservators interaction with a medieval manuscript and her findings about its, and in parallel her own life's, mysteries. This outer story enfolds a series of inner tales about the manuscripts history, travels, and intersections with the lives it influenced, affected, and inspired.
This is a satisfying book, even the title is layered: the people of the book can be seen as those specific to each aspect of the tale, both past and present; or as those from the wider context of each of the tales, the Muslims, Jews, Christians, Sarajevans, all those whose cultural weight and perception of the value or purpose of the book provided the trajectory of its travels though time and history.
I liked it. And I recommend it you.
