I wish I had read this book before visiting Russia. It sets out with great clarity the foibles and challenges of the Romanov rulers. The tales of murder and mayhem are extraordinary- a soap opera but real. The style is very entertaining and accessible- but with plenty of footnotes for those who want more in depth background. Particularly interesting are the tales of the powerful women who ruled Russia for so much of the period, and the last Empress whose weaknesses the author pins much of the blame for the dynasty’s downfall upon.
