Heather, I loved your story, your frankness, your portrayal of 'how it was' for you on that incredible trip through Africa. You are brave to have done it and courageous for now publishing your story.
All power to you from one overlander to another. I am going to overland in Africa with my partner in December, but heck not on a bike, but in our Gaz 66 'oldish' Russian truck, beginning in Morocco, then heading down the West Coast. I feel marginally braver now, after reading your book. Write more....you have a natural style. All the best to you. Rensina van den Heuvel.
Heather's book is much more than a travel yarn about an Africa which most tourists don't see, and indeed usually avoid. It is a story of a personal journey of self discovery, a spiritual pilgrimage of one courageous woman who is convinced that humans are intrinsically good, and that there is a Universal Energy working to ensure that all will be well. Despite encountering difficulties, illness, and sometimes evil, Heather was embraced by the people of Africa who showed her unlimited generosity and taught her the importance of Ubuntu, the connectness between us all. You won't read this book without being inspired to nurture the Spirit of Ubuntu in your own small corner of the world.
I was so very impressed with this book, that I find it hard to describe the profound effect, that it had on my acknologement and acceptance of various happenings in my life. Well done Heather for championing women's abilities, youhave proved that they can also do it,
This is a "must read" book at so many levels. From a travel and adventure perspective, the writing is vivid and brings to life the beauty of nature, towns, cities and people. I could clearly see the images as I read the beautifully written passages. From a life-perspective, this has been one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. The lessons I've learnt from this remarkable woman, are powerful and they are making me think deeply. A wonderful book from an inspiring and extraordinary woman. I will read this book again...many times.
This is the Africa we all know is out there and it is Africans that make it that way. Heather, this book is a delight! I will never have the courage to do what you have done but the honesty and frankness about your experience reveals Africa in all its glory and despair without judgement. Thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Heather has a beautiful way describing her journey. The people she met, the emphasis she has for all. I have been to some African places she visited but not as comprehensive as she has. I could not put the book down. Thank you Heather!
I loved the way Heather described her journey, following her heart, and trusting, that good things would come to her. A very inspiring story, believing in the good in people and receiving just that and much more. At the same time she is describing the country and nature beautifully.
