Reading Sila's story makes me simultaneously thankful I have so much less to unpack from my childhood, and deeply admiring of the resilience of Sila and her siblings. It also makes me furious that parents are so careless with their children that they drag them into these situations with a complete lack of forethought or protection. If you as an adult want to join one of these cults yourself then be that on your own head, but leave the children out of them! The patriarchy, hypocrisy, double standards, and child abuse of all kinds that runs rampant in the vast majority of these groups make them no place for children. It's bad enough for the adult women, usually. An excellent story, and I'd be interested in reading a sequel.
This book is a heartbreaking and devastating look into the significant psychological damage caused by childhood abuse. The author is incredibly able to make you feel as though you are right there and able to see the cult life as if you were experiencing it yourself. I await the sequel with an eagerness and hope for Sila that life after the cult held some relief from the torment and some moments of true happiness.
