The author of Uncle Tom' Cabin had an amazing influence on the struggle to abolish slavery in the United States and hence on the history of the U.S. Her life story and the story of her remarkable family is told well, though sometimes with too much detail. Mrs. Stowed's spiritual journey is described, but not with enough clarity. Clearly she was influenced by liberalism, but how much and in what ways is not clear. However this book is an interesting account of the life of a remarkable woman who fought successfully for the causes she espoused.
