Interesting, with some lyrical passages
20 October 2018
This book seemed to fall into two distinct parts- the first being before the author met his wife, where he came across as a not-very-attractive character with no time for education, and the second where he has met his wife and transformed into someone who has interests in both his farming heritage and the wider world. Unfortunately very little is said about the wife, despite her excellent influence, and given what she and the children must have gone through in the harsh conditions, this omission detracts from the book. That said, however, there are some beautiful, even lyrical descriptions of the farming year, and the information re farming traditions and practices is fascinating.
