A worthy stablemate for Shades, which was a hard act to follow! Full of delightingly unusual ideas that make you stop and think and smile. Fforde's alternative worlds are wonderful places to become immersed in. You know you're in a great book when you simultaneously want to romp onwards and not have it end too soon!
This is one of my favourite books. Clever, funny, well written, and compulsive reading. The characters are fascinating and the concept of human hibernation provides the perfect, unlikely playground for Fforde's satire. Highly recommend.
I love Fforde's imagination. This book again reimagines our world so it's both recognisable and completely alien. Who hasn't ever wondered what it would be like if humans hibernated? But Fforde actually actioned that idea in an entertaining and extremely engaging way. I wish my brain worked like that!
Mr Fforde's brain is just as amazing as ever. His world-building is weirdly unique and can't be read on the fly. His stories have so much going on that it's easy to get distracted by the footnotes and chapter quotes and the little in-jokes the characters litter their dialogue with. A convoluted plot, conspiracy, corporate greed, lovable villains, ethical dilemmas, and a winter culture that borders on the believable - all combine for a clever and comic read. I love how he transforms the ordinary everyday into fabulous fiction. My only regret is that the one day I spent in Wales, I didn't see a single mammoth - and I haven't worn a woncho since the 70's!
