I've used the instant types, and made my own from scratch. This is the best of both worlds! Super convenient, amazing, authentic flavor. Simmer for 5 minutes in 3 cups water, less for stronger broth. The best I've used.
This is a nice powdered mix in a bag to make individual servings of broth or tempura dipping sauce like the restaurants to do. Unfortunately there is no English so I bring the bag to a boil and 2 cups of water, boil for 5 to 10 minutes, add some soy sauce and die con radish, and brown sugar and it is delicious!
Dashi is required for authentic Japanese flavor. My first time making dashi and found this very convenient to use. Added 2 packets to 1200ml of water and boiled on low for 4 minutes then turned off heat and let steep for another 5 minutes. This is probably longer cooking than recommended. I found the flavor slightly strong so I added a bit more water to get the taste I wanted. Made a really good Udon soup. Next I'm making Miso soup. I'd buy this again. It does smell up the house a bit.
The product I received is not what is pictured. Upon further inspection, It is loaded with MSG. In fact, it is the first ingredient on the list. Even the kelp extract has MSG in it. Tried to start a return... "NOT ELIGIBLE FOR RETURN"
