INTO THE HEAT, Sandy Reid mystery series by Rod Hoisington. Book 6 of the series flows well, reads easily and projects enough dialogue to keep the reader interested. The small coastal town of Park Beach, Florida comes alive with the likes of Sandy Reid, the sassy, sexy, brilliant and streetwise newly-minted defense attorney in the town. If there are bad guys in the area, you can bet Sandy is in hot pursuit. On cue several murders take place and Sandy is at once on scene acting as surrogate defense attorney, private investigator and even attorney general. She frequently volunteers strategy for the law enforcement community in their efforts to round up shady characters and bring them to justice. Sandy is as tough and refreshing in the sixth of the series as she was in the first. However, she never fails to surprise me with her offbeat dalliances that sometimes seem out of character. If I had any complaint about the writing it is that often the author pads the narrative with unimportant, lengthy and redundant details describing insignificant and irrelevant characters and places. That said, the dialogue and narration are well balanced. Hoisington has done a masterful job of keeping his prime characters—Sandy, Martin, Lester, Julia, Shapiro, Jaworski and others in focus, interesting and in the limelight. I enjoyed the book and give it a 4-star rating.
