What an exemplary debut novel from L.J. Ross! Atmospheric with a plotline that keeps you turning the pages with abandon.
I can't say I particularly liked DCI Ryan's gruff exterior at the beginning, but as his defences slowly came down & he revealed more of his story, you couldn't help but admire his stoicism in the face of adversity.
The story centres around Holy Island (a real place) & the murders that take place within. Atmospheric, haunting & enticing, it draws you in as DCI Ryan battles to find the culprit in what becomes an increasingly creepy plot.
Add in Dr Anna Taylor as the historical police consultant brought in to interpret the ritual aspects of the murders, and you have the beginning of a romance. She is the strong catalyst for DCI Ryan opening up about his past & finding his confidence in a confusing case.
Without any spoilers, I must say the ending of the novel was a shock that guarantees you want to read on & discover what happens in the rest of the series.
I have already downloaded books 2 & 3, and look forward to reading about the corrupt creepiness to come.
