Even a jaded reader will enjoy this book, as it's full of humour and poignant moments. The first few chapters are laugh out loud funny. Shy Maddie is tired of being pressured to socialise, so she invents a fake fiancé, a soldier Logan MacKenzie. When she tells her family the fake fiancé died in action a relative bequeaths her a Scottish castle where she retires, a happy spinster..... until the day the real Logan MacKenzie shows up at her door.
The fake fiancé farce is really funny. The story of the Scots dispossessed from their lands is poignant. But the experiences of Logan's soldier companions are heart breaking. The author treads a fine line between humour and pathos but she does it well. Do keep a box of tissues on standby.
Much of the book's quality comes from the lead characters who become truly believable people as their own stories unfold. There are also some lobsters with their very own story. It's a very satisfying book and highly recommended.
4.5/5. Charming, funny, but with great emotional depth also. Sociophobic Maddie invented an absent Higlander captain at sixteen to avoid going to London for the usual Season circus. To keep up appearances of a faithful fiancee, she diligently wrote regular letters to him and even wrote the replies back. Years later, her lies have escalated and allowed her to remain single and socially isolated, as she desired. Unfortunately, with pain in her heart, she had to kill off her beloved betrothed, before she became entrapped in the web of her own invention. She did not count on a tall, dashing, somewhat angry, real life Captain Mackenzie knocking on her door one day. Fantasies can come true, but can she handle the truth?
Classic Tessa Dare...wildly romantic with an eccentric heroine named Madeleine who invented a scots lover to avoid society....Logan turns out to be very real and so these two damaged individuals begin the journey to happy ever after. This is a thoroughly enjoyable romance.
I started to read and then struggled to put this one down. The start was unique and brilliant and I was hooked from the start. Who doesn't have fantasies as a teenager. Throw into the mix a highlander and I was hooked. ❤❤❤
I've read this book twice now and enjoyed it both times. Tessa Dare puts a unique twist into the way the heroine meets her hero with some humour thrown in. It also deals with issues suffered by soldiers returning from years at war. Definitely worth a read.
