This was a great first book in a series. The book has switching POVs between Elias, a soldier for the Martials at Blackcliff school, and Laia, a Scholar girl who is spying on the Martials for the Resistance. They are both important to each other’s lives and goals without knowing it, and the book lays out how such small choices and events can change the path of your destiny. I really loved all the characters in this novel. The evil characters were done really well and the heroes were done great. Helene is Elias’ best friend at Blackcliff and we see how their friendship changes after things come to light and things are revealed about what type of person both Elias and Helene are. I actually enjoyed Laia as a character and didn’t find her annoying like some other people may have. She has a bit of that ‘useless’ vibe but she still manages to get stuff done and complete her missions for the Resistance. Beware though: if you don’t like love triangles you probably wont enjoy this book. There are actually two love triangles in this book involving two different characters, so if this is a big pet peeve for you I would probably steer clear. Also, this book does end on a cliffhanger so if this is another no-no for you perhaps make sure you have the next book ready to go . It does kind of end on a Happily Ever After though which is nice, but as I said it’s a cliffhanger so you don’t really know if it will continue that way. I didn’t really have any major issues or qualms about this book that made me not give it 5 stars, I just felt it didn’t really have that ‘WOW’ factor that pushes it over the edge for me. I wasn’t glued to the pages or anything but I did find the book really enjoyable. Definitely pick this one up if you’ve been wondering what it’s about. I found it best to go into this book blind because there is a lot revealed in the book that I don’t want to ruin for you so stop reading reviews and just go read it! This is definitely more of a YA fantasy book, but I think you could enjoy this book if you are more mature but still love fantasy.

Set in a brutal world that is inspired by Ancient Rome and its ruthless way of ruling with an iron fist, the story is told by 2 characters: Laia and Elias.. Both from completely separate ways of life yet their destinies intertwine in such an unlikely manner sending them on a path that could lead to the start of a revolution.. twists.. turns.. betrayal..
A powerful and well written debut novel that is simply un-put-downable..
