Kaderin the Cold-hearted, so named for a special blessing received by the goddess Riora to feel nothing. No loss, no pain, no frustration, no anger, no irritation and most of all...no love. As a Valkyrie, born of the gods she is the perfect killer. Her life is an endless series of vampire kills and training for the Talismans Hie (basically the Amazing Race but for artifacts) she's content with it. Her reason for appealing to the gods to bless (curse, really) her to feel no emotion? The loss of her sisters in a battle long ago. She spared the life of a vampire and in turn he killed her 2 sisters in front of her. Sebastian Wroth despises what he has become. Forced by his older brothers to become a vampire against his wishes, he wants nothing to do with his family or the world. When Kaderin seeks him out to kill him (because she's a blood thirsty mofo), he gladly resigns himself to his fate. Her confusion at his resolve to end his life sparks an attraction he can't deny as his heart finally beats for the one he was made to be with. His Bride. Refusing the truth, Kaderin starts to feel for the first time in a thousand years. Realising she is his Bride and reeling from their attraction to each other coupled with her proximity to him and the emotions the situation invokes, she freaks out and legs it. Sebastian can't understand why she would run from him and after so long with nothing in his life but existing from one day to the next he finally has something to live for. I really enjoyed this story, more than I thought I would. The fact that they are both aware they don't feel love toward one another at the outset, Sebastian's constant attempts to win Kaderin's favour and his utter lack of confidence in his ability to do so are so endearing. His innate sense of honour and his never ending devotion to her during the fierce competition of the Talismans Hie are what made this book a winner for me. Their love seemed to develop naturally which is something a lot of books in this genre just don't do. Too much talk of fated and cosmic destiny and all that. Hats off to you Kresley.
Ooh this cover is nicer than the one I purchased! An enjoyable read with good main characters though I did wish that Sebastian had been a fraction more needy :O) His women issues seemed to be super rather easily overcome/ glossed over in the beginning but that is just my opinion ... really want to find out what happened to the Lycan in the story that was looking for his mate which is a sign of a good story to me (leaves you wanting more).
