4.0 out of 5 starsA surprisingly great read
6 February 2019
I'm no fan of Young Adult (YA) fiction and not particularly fond of 'best sellers' so The Hunger Games (THG) was going to have to work awfully hard right from the outset to hook me. How surprised was I then when it did exactly that? Unlike typical YA fiction, THG was well-written, grown up and tackled some heavy themes. Even better were the believable and likable protagonists (complete with tough girl heroine and sensitive hero), and the fact author Suzanne Collins didn't shy away from blood and gore (albeit slight sanitized).

I can highly recommend THG to fans of action - whether you're YA orientated or not.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot bad, though not a classic

The lead character is particularly well developed and some well done plot surprises. Definitely in the soft sci-fi category. I thought some invented terminology for technology (an example escapes me) and other things was a bit clumsy, so I am not sure sci-fi is a natural fit for the author.

I don't really know how to explain my feelings about this book. It's a great fast paced story with action, romance, drama and real sorrow too. The heroine is guardian type personality but the people she loves keep being taken from her and the one person she seems finally able to keep......
The end was annoyingly leading, but I can't help thinking like all tyrants President Snow was arrogant and foolish, but in his reactions to Katniss he almost assumes she is openly and intentionally rebelling when all she is really doing is trying to protect the lives of the people she loves. Because of his assumption he does everything to tighten his control while she does everything to survive and protect. It really is a foregone conclusion that their worlds will collide if she survives.
Seriously well written and the emotional urgency and the pains and sorrow brought me to tears. Overall the thoughts provoked is what keeps coming and makes me want to get the next book.

4.0 out of 5 starsA TRULY FANTASTIC READ!!!!
29 December 2013
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
The book is very well written and beautifully structured tale of survival in a world gone mad. The former United States of America was hit with some kind of apocalypse and only those living in the Capitol have any kind of comfortable living. Every year one member of each of the poorer sections of the country - nicknamed Districts - is selected to enter a tournament where all those selected fight for their own survial. This is where we meet the stars of the show. First and foremost is Katniss Everdeen, whose father was killed in a mining accident when she was a little girl. Since that point she has been the rock her family depends on as her mother is but a shadow of her former self since the loss of her husband. She is from District 12 and is remarkably talented with a bow and arrow and of course she is not stupid, either.

Other members of the cast are introduced to the reader as you progress through the story. Some are friends to Kat, some are not and some are not at all obvious.

The book itself is very hard to put down, and not just due to the cliffhangers that are used at the end of every chapter, which will make you keep reading until the battery in your kindle wears out. The story is tense and terrific and the fight scenes are perfectly drawn in your mind. Elements are there to define the tale as science fiction but it certainly could not be described as such. The emotional attachment to Kat is strong due to the sacrifices she has made already in her young life. Of course the reader is scared something dreadful will happen to our young hero so that is one more reason to turn each page with trepidation.

I give this book four stars. It may be worth more but as it is book one of a trilogy one has to leave room for improvement. But this is a modern day classic that should be read by everyone. A truly fantastic and original idea that has been brilliantly executed.

Like most other people I have seen the movie and enjoyed it. Of course it's no surprise the book has much more detail and is a very interesting read. It makes sense of a few things that weren't explained in the movie. Not quite like anything I've read before actually and I enjoyed it immensely. It's quite a journey for the main character both physically and emotionally, and we're taken along for the ride. Brutal in parts, as it is a fight for survival, but overall I'd recommend this book and I will be reading the others in the series.

5.0 out of 5 starsalthough the details are wonderfully clever and interesting

Never mind the details, although the details are wonderfully clever and interesting. This story is about bravery and loyalty and generosity which is never forced but comes naturally to a young person of great character. All to such a degree as to bring tears to the eyes. When you read the following books you will see that Katniss, all unaware of the effect she is having , inspires others to stand up and endure and strive to be the best that they can be. Finally she is exhausted, but her example has transformed her world for the better.
Suzanne Collins has created an inspiring character and if I have a daughter I'll be calling her Katniss.

My cousin and I got kindles for Christmas and we both bought the hunger games in the first ten minutes of having our kindles

I read this book until I couldn't read any more there is so much beautiful lines that describe the actuators beautifully and the writer has a great creative mine for the names, location, looks, and scripts in the book

I have very little internet once I finished the Hunger games in went straight to the book store (on my kindle) and tied to down load the Hunger games catching fire it took me 2 hours to down load and when the book down loaded I screamed at the top of my lugs and I am currently reading this book now
