Bali sadness

This was a great read. Being an old Bali holidayer for the past 30 years I can certainly relate to this book.
It is sad to now see the young Balinese with their heads down in their phones wearing western clothes and eating western food.
The Bali I fell in love with is still there but a somewhat distant relative to the Bali I first met

As a yearly visitor to Bali, I found this book full of answers to many questions that always bugged me while we were there. As a tourist you only ever scrape the surface of the why and wherefore. I'm glad I'm now better informed. Thank you.

great I agree with most of what he has written and worry re the water situation Education and penalties from the government is the only remedy. Maybe then they will stop watering the pavement
Re traffic Take away the government subsidy and people will think twice about using their vehicle to go 20 metres to the shop.
While I would like to see the Balinese keep their traditions and ceremonies I hate seeing them trying to outdo their neighbours with lavishness. They go into debt to have the ceremonies and don't believe in saving for a rainy day.
Then worry as the Javanese have more than them

It is three years since I was last there, but like many Australians, the island of Bali has figured greatly in my life.
Phil Jarratt is someone who knows and understands this beautiful island at a deeper level than most Australians. His book gives a real down-to-earth insight into the Bali that was...and into what Bali has become. A must read for anyone who wishes to understand the vibrant and sometimes difficult relationship between Australia and this part of Indonesia.

Thank you Phil for this wonderful book , I too am joined at the hip to Bali. The history was fascinating and the second half was great . I hope all us Bali lovers will act NOW to help with future problems which are going to ruin this beautiful island and affect the lives of the most lovely people - The Balinese .

I so enjoyed the history leading up to the ' now ' , the gossip , the different points of view and I hope that every visitor to Bali will buy it , read it whilst there and become a more responsible tourist because of it .
