I was eager to read this second book in the series and see Sebastian's story unfurl. I read it immediately after finishing A Kiss of Lies. We met Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst in the first book when he was in Jamaica after fleeing England following a duel where he killed Dougie Hennessey. The other Libertine Scholars have worked hard to get Sebastian a pardon & he sails back to England. Beatrice Hennessey is waiting at the docks to confront Sebastian on his return. Beatrice ends up being pushed into the water by prostitutes and is saved by none other than the man she hates- Sebastian. Beatrice may hate Sebastian but she's willing to do whatever she has to, to try and secure the future of her family after Douglas' death left them near penniless & to avoid Lord Dunmire who wishes to marry her. I loved Sebastian & Beatrice, their relationship started off with her hating him but neither could deny the attraction & passion between them. I could have shaken Sebastian at times. We are given some more clues as to why someone is intent on ruining the Scholars & more pawns are revealed. I’m now hooked on the series, not only wanting to find out how the other Scholars find their happy endings but also to find out who is so intent on exacting revenge on them & if their theory for the reason is correct. The story would just about stand alone but I’d definitely recommend reading in order.
