There are about thirty pages just past halfway where this book is up to scratch. The rest seems like a whole series of ideas, characters and their relationships, and horrible situations thrown into a mix by a couple of people after an extended session at the pub with other horror writers.
Detective Lennon is a caricature whose wife has been locked away after a bout of post natal depression where she strangled their baby. Fortunately Patrick came home early and so saved the baby. What better detective to lead an investigation into baby abduction and death.
DCI Patrick Lennon has teenage punk tattoos, a love of punk music, and affects puffing on a vapour cigarette. This device he pulls out while interviewing a suspect and other illegal and socially moronic times.
Most of his time Patrick is thinking how he appears to other people If he's not mooning over his boss. There is a moment at the secure facility where the receptionist seems to dismiss him. So he writes DCI Patrick Lennon in the visitors book which knocks her socks off until the security scan discovers another teenage affectation in his crutch area. He feels pathetic. A description with which I completely agree.
His partner is a lesbian and the solid part of the detecting duo. His nemesis is a jerk who is only marginally less intelligent and so tries to compete. He outdoes Patrick as a narcissistic personality. Compete high school scenario.
Anyway there is a series of baby abductions with one turning up dead in a traveller's camp. Even Patrick does not believe this plot turn. But it wastes a bit of time and about thirty pages.
I can't describe most of the rest except to say the final reveal is in the same general line of what's the worst i can write about.
This farce finishes with DCI Lennon facing a moral decision and the imminent release of his wife. He gives both the same searching investigation as his character allows.
If Harry Potter floats your boat then this story might appeal. Otherwise next time Mark and Louise decide to have a plot party please don't get any ideas that you should write a book about what's the worst story we could write.
