Johanna is the daughter of a successful merchant and a noble from Estland. They live in Saarland under the rule of King Nicholaos who has bled the royal coffers dry in his grief over his daughter’s death. Once he realises that nothing will bring her back he has no option but to name his son, Prince Roald, as heir to the throne. Prince Roald however, is not normal. After bandits and magic users sack the city Johanna escapes with her maid, Nelle; a friend, Loesie and Prince Roald. Roald is of course the new king since his father and he needs to be married to someone strong enough to guide him and restore the kingdom. That, however, seems to be an unreachable dream. As with most of Patty Jansen’s books this is a great story. It is marred only by the extremely poor proof reading. If not for that I would have given it a 5 star rating. As it is it gets 4 stars.
