Beautifully woven tale

‘A Discovery of Witches’ is one of my all time fave books, I think I have read it about 5 times. The second book in the series ‘Shadow of Night’ was a bit up in the air for me, while I enjoyed it, I found it so hard to read. there were soooooooo many characters and I found it really difficult to keep up with who was who. Then came the final book in the trilogy ‘The Book of Life’ and I have to say that it was a great ending to the series. It was not fabulous, it did not blow me away but it was satisfying. What I do hope is that they do not make spin off’s of this series, there were some parts that were left ambiguous and not tied off into a neat bow, so I hope they do not ruin the series by trying to out do it. What I loved most about this series is the characters, they were so full and whole. There was not one time that I had to wonder what a character was thinking or speculate about what they may do becasue I felt like I knew them so well. Deborah Harkness created a magical world (literally and figuratively) that was so beautifully sculpted and weaved together.
Matthew and Diana are two of my favourite characters, if there were ever two characters that were perfect for each other and true soul mates it would be those two. They are both so secure in their love and future that it is so wonderful to read. The journey that these two make together from beginning to end it the definition of epic. They travel a journey of self discovery, a journey of love, a journey through time, a journey of redemption, a journey of justice and of salvation.
There were so many wonderful characters in this series, Yasbeau, Phillip, Em, Sarah, Gallowglas, Jack, Marcus, I truly loved them all. But Diana is definitely my fave, she is a modern day Joan of Arc, she kicks arse and takes names!!!! With all the responsibility in the world on her shoulders she maintains class, honour and above all integrity.
This series is really an awesome journey, and I enjoyed the ride. From start to finish this series is written with class and perfection, the story is beautifully complex and woven artfully. I truly enjoyed this journey and know this is a series that I will pick up over and over again, and enjoy it every time.
“But you have become as vital to me as breath and blood. My heart no longer knows where I end and you begin. I knew that you were a powerful witch from the moment I saw you, but how could I have imagined that you would have so much power over me?” – Matthew
