A factual and fascinating "Upstairs Downstairs" story.

A fascinating biography written by a 97 year old woman still in possession of a sharp mind and excellent memory. Charmingly written in a style all her own, it tells the story of this eldest daughter of a working class but tightly knit and loving family who, in order to assist with the support of her family and make something of herself, leaves home with great trepidation to begin work "below stairs" for a wealthy, aristocratic family. Lovers of the fictional "Upstairs Downstairs" and "Downton Abbey" will be fascinated by Hilda Newman's true life account. Historically very interesting as the story describes the chasm between the "Haves" and "Have Nots" and how this era came to its conclusion with the advent of World War Two. Thoroughly recommended.
