This book opens with a plea for help from everyone's favourite hottie girlfriend - Susan Silverman - and with Hawk in jail charged with murder and criminal assault, a jail break is on the cards in the most explosively exciting opening to a Spenser novel ever written. No time for sarcasm, witticisms or dry comments on the meaning of life in this one, baby!
Spenser hits the ground running in a bid to sort out the craziness his friends and lover find themselves in. It turns out that Hawk was set up by bad people from a bad town, which is virtually owned by a very powerful and wealthy (and also bad) man. It also turns out that our Susan is being held hostage by the son of this very powerful and wealthy man. Too bad for the bad guys. They picked on the wrong guys to set up.
Mr Parker is writing his usual highly entertaining mystery novel here with a very original plot. The reader gets plenty of action and intrigue, with some poignant moments from an interesting alternative to Susan. One liners are still available to enjoy - mainly from Hawk making fun of his buddy Spenser but we will still find them funny, too.
All in all CATSKILL EAGLE is one of the all time great Spenser novels. I am happy to give this one full marks.
