There's a great story hiding in this book wanting to get out
23 June 2015
There's a great story hiding in this book wanting to get out, but the book fails to release it. Horace is too focused on himself and especially his sexual exploits to allow the hidden narrative to shine. Human nature being what it is, it's hard to believe so many POWs kept his secret and we so supportive. So much unprotected sex and Rosa never fell pregnant until the end: at times the story is barely believable. There are flashes of great story telling here, but the book continually lapses into shallow bravado and titillation, leaving no room for the great story to emerge. I wanted the stories behind the story, but they weren't told. The ending was as predictable as it was inevitable: there are better books about the second world war.
