It is lovely to have history presented in such an up to date way. We take so much for granted and this book reminds us of our luck in living today. Marcia Talley is always presenting thoughtful ,insightful looks at some of life's contemporary issues. Many of those we take for granted or previously knew nothing about.
I too have read all of the Hannah Ives books and do not agree with the negative review also posted here. It was a delight to read this book, keeping me up to midnight to finish it so definitely a page turner. The detail of dress, food and life of historical Annapolis were so well presented from such a contemporary viewpoint. Actually, the more one thinks about this book, the better it gets. Definitely worth a read. Well done Marcia.
I have read and enjoyed all of Marcia Talley's books. The Last Refuge, which I purchased from Amazon, is a huge disappointment for me. The plot is ridiculous, and I thought Hannah was a character who would refuse to sign such a foolish contract. Much of the charm of Talley's books lies in the involvement of her family members. I realize that taking the main character away from contact with the usual group of people and setting is a type of literary device many authors use. That is usually the point when I stop reading that author. If this is going to be the direction Talley will take with Hannah, I will not buy or read any more of her books.
