This is much more than a horse story - it’s an ANZAC story, one of battles won and lost, the men with vision who defied the odds and won the day. It’s about brave men and their loyal mounts and supreme of them was the outstanding Waler, Bill the Bastard, and his contribution to the Light Horse war effort. Well written and a page turner.
i gave this book 5 stars because not only is it an amazing story, but more importantly, it is told extremely well. I was impressed w the descriptions, the way the reader was drawn in. also impressed by the way alternatives weights, heights, currencies etc were given, so that the reader was not left behind. by telling of the absolute 'end' of the main characters in the story put a very fitting end to the book. thankyou!
A delight to read. This story of Bill has been needed to be told, our Aussie horses are special and brave. The partnership of Bill & Shanahan is quite remarkable and Bill's relationship with others most interesting. A real hero in appalling situations.
I didn't know very much about the war or about horses until I read this book. It was so enlightening, and I'm glad the "Bastard" had a happy ending otherwise the reader would have been very gutted - for man and beast.
I loved the movie "War Horse", and I loved this story "Bill the Bastard" even more. It pulled no punches in its description of the carnage of war. The heroic actions of man and beast was made all the more enjoyable to read by the sensitive insight into the private lives of a few of the soldiers who came in contact with Bill. Bill the Bastard, a horse like no other. You don't have to be a horse lover or a war buff, to enjoy this story. I was sorry when I had finished this great read. Zeni.
Bill the bastard was. Another story that gave me enjoyment I did feel like crying in some sections it was that sad but the best part was when bill had a unknown rider and would not move but got his comeuppance because the unknown rider knew how to ride he gentler the horse into being good the whole story was great reading thankyou
A great story about the war and how the Light Horse contributed to victory in the Middle East. Those who know of Gallipoli may not know the continuing story of the ANZAC's and their contribution to pushing the Turkish troops out of Egypt. It tells of the efforts made by the horses, and the wonderful bonds between the horsemen and their neddies.
