This is the 3rd main title in the Lorien Legacies series. The book basically tells two stories, that of John and Number 9 and how they not only start to forge a friendship, but also how they try to stay free of the Mogs and the Government, whilst searching for the other Garde and Sam and Sarah. The other part of the story follows Number 6, Marina, Ella and Crayton as they head to India in search of Number 8. As the book goes on, we get a pretty clear impression that the group led by the girls, and Crayton, Ella’s Cepan, has far more direction and the ability to discuss things and make decisions. The boys however, constantly fight amongst themselves, always disagreeing about where they should go. However, when it comes to actual confrontations, both sides seem to be able to hold their own. This book has some interesting dialogue and scenes, giving a bit more detail on each of the Garde, insight into their pasts, and their ‘Legacies’. As the story continues (without giving too much of the plot away) we get to meet Number 8, leaving only Number 5 as the last of the living Garde that we haven’t yet seen. The Rise of Nine has all the expected components of this type of story, the continued love interests between John and Sarah, some new ones (no plot spoilers though). There are numerous fight and action scenes with epic use of their ‘Legacies’ and introduction of multiple new ‘Legacies’ from both existing and new characters adding extra dimension to the characters and the story. We continue to learn about our characters, Lorien, the Mogs, and Setrakus Ra. There are multiple plot twists revealed, some are a bit obvious, and some not so much. It all leads to a fairly spectacular ending. Overall, this book is exactly what it is meant to be, a fast paced action packed novel, with lots of awesome characters and abilities and a lot of fun to read.
