Nails what it is to be a teenager like very few others
19 September 2015
Nails what it is to be a teenager like very few others. Self-deprecating to the point of cringe-worthiness. Gaines is the ultimate nerd in a hostile, unforgiving world. Full of insight, wisdom and, ultimately, a deep sense of humanity. Told, mainly by Gaines himself, in a disarmingly original, confronting manner, in conversational tone to the reader. Original and moving. Falls short of the film adaptation on account of the final coda, missing in the book, which is just sublime.
