THE CONTINUATION OF SOMETHING SPECIAL ......
Reviewed in Australia on 8 May 2014
INSURGENT, by the delightfully masterful and still unequivocally brilliant Veronica Roth, starts off precisely where book one of this extraordinary dystopian saga ended. We read more of this fascinating world of politics, intrigue, back-stabbing, teen love, techno-drama come sci-fi epic, and the more we read, the more we love it.
Tris is still madly in love with Four, she still hates his father whilst still grieving over the sudden and horrific death of her own family members. One wonders, however, by book's end, whether Four will still be the same character that Tris and the millions of world wide readers have all fallen head over heels in love with. (But not me. I'm a bloke.). Indeed, one wonders given the dramatic turn of events (amid the gut wrenching scenes that occurred at the end of book one), what kind of cataclysmic events will occur at the end of book two.
Anyway, the second volume is amazing. Characters both good and bad leap off your kindle screen to poke you in the eye - metaphorically speaking, of course - and the action scenes are all beautifully drawn and depicted. The atmosphere of the book is outstanding, too, with emotional connections keeping you addicted and linked to the story long after you go to sleep, or long after you arrive at work. The plot leads you on, slowly at first, with the classic, "just one more chapter kind of feeling" inherent in all good works of fiction.
At this early stage of the book i am happy to award it four stars. But by book's end, don't be surprised if I upgrade it to five. If i can stand the suspense, that is!
