Lovely, engaging narrator providing a different perspective on race relations in the deep South.

I really enjoyed this novel, and can see why it received so many accolades. Lily is a delightful narrator, and Monk Kidd has successfully captured how trace relations might have been seen through the eyes of a young girl. Lily's story sets her up as a perfect foil to the background of change and simmering racial violence that runs through the novel. Warm, witty and ultimately optimistic, this was an easy and engaging read despite its sometimes horrific content.
