I found this to be a truly beautiful story, speaking to the innocence of a child amidst the depravity of the holocaust. The central character to this story is a 9-year-old boy named Bruno, who is untainted by the knowledge of the war that surrounds him, and his own father’s involvement as Commandant. When Bruno is begrudgingly relocated away from his home in Berlin, he embarks on a journey of discovery and meets a ‘boy in striped pyjamas’ on the other side of the fence that divides them. As the story unravels we see the juxtaposition between the pure evil that surrounds them, and the tenderness of children unmarked by the animosity of war.
