Brilliant

Couldn't put it down and this was reading it for the second time after a long duration from the first reading. Should be compulsory for all senior high school students so that they can come to grips with the horror of war that humans can't seem to get away from.

A slow story....

A slow story.....with brief periods of descriptive action. Nicely tied together between the two time periods. A good look at trench warfare in WW1.

A ripping read: authentic, gripping and still relevant. Faulks captures the period in finely crafted detail. His characters are full , rich in humanity and frailty. The grinding images of industrialized savagery feasting upon its endless victims is compelling. The messages are still important and vital.

Very well written covering 2 eras, the war and the grand kids. Build a great story teaching about some good history and how much has n=been forgotten or not passed on

Can only try to grasp but hardly fathom what the impact and everlasting scars it must have left on surveyors of the immensely horrifying but also extremely defying event in our history. Beautiful written story line combining then with the present, and creation of a new life. Highly recommend this book.

A real page turner and details many of the tribulations of WW1 life in the trenches.
