A whimsical murder-mystery set in the town of Reading, where the Nursery Crimes Division has been tasked to investigate the murder of Humpty Dumpty. While I did enjoy the “Douglas Adams” touches, I did find it a bit thick on the whimsy for most of the book, and it was really only around the 80% mark that the various clues that had been seeded through the novel came together. For something different, I enjoyed it and would recommend it when you’re in the mood for something not at all serious.
Fforde, the inventive author of the brilliantly quirky 'Thursday Next' books has another masterpiece. Solving the murder of 'the big egg' will involve a complicated series of plot twists and red herring, playing in the background is the cut-throat world of competitive detecting and the protagonist's colourful past. The end is sheer Genius. That said, the second in the series.. The Fourth Bear, is even better.
