I didn't like philosophy at all until I read Alain. Philosophical ideas from Socrates, Seneca, Montaigne, and Nietzsche become so clear and lively in his book that I couldnt stop turning pages.
How Socrates face his death so calmly and his legacy reigns in millennia, how Seneca rose above every sorrow in his life to lay fundamental understandings of all kind of sufferings life has upon human being, and that death after all in deed a blessings. The flow of ideas came into me just like a little stream with water so fresh that you will keep looking down on which reflects your very face: how my life looks like for a young man living in poverty with the sexual desire to be tamed, intellectual inadequacies to be improved, sad memories to be soothed and wisdom to be gained.
This makes me now interested in Kand, Plato, and Arthur Schopenhauer....
Thank you Botton. Philosophy made easy and so beautiful in this book.
Alain de Botton has made the works of Seneca, Nietzsche, Montaigne and others applicable in a modern setting, providing poignant and often times humorous examples of where these great thinkers ideas can be applied in your day. de Botton has provided a relevant, direct overview of each of the six great thinker's lives and works then concentrated on why their philosophy is important to us. As someone new to philosophy and not terribly interested in battling through ancient, esoteric texts, Alain de Botton has made these works approachable and useful today. Easy reading, thoughtfully paced, I highly recommend.
