This is one of those novels that is on all the lists of 100 best books. It starts a little slowly but the pace and excitement build up and accelerate with wonderful twists and turns in the plot. Collins was a lawyer by training and he was interested in how evidence can be given in all honesty and then another witness adds something or gives a different perspective that totally changes what we thought we knew. He was also interested in how the Law is one thing and Justice sometimes quite something else. Another interest of his, sadly appropriate to today, was identity theft. This is a very long novel and, be warned, difficult to put down.
The story held my interest from the start to the finish. A period drama, set in England in the middle of the 19th century. The story contains many interesting characters with many twists and turns in the narrative.
Enthralling from the start. A rich plot. Twists throughout the book kept me interested. The only criticism I have is that the heroin's character was very weak and I felt her sister more deserving of the role.
What a very interesting tale. The use of several narrators to impart the story was a very interesting concept that was done extremely well in this book. The language used was rather dated and at times tiresome to read but this factor did not deflect the storyline which was excellent. Am now reading another of this authors novel which is also written in the same style. If you want to read a novel that is different and enjoyable then this is the book for you I really enjoyed it
