I first gave it 4 stars but then remembered how I read late into the night (or early morning) even though I had to get up early and teach 32 third graders! I actually took them on a field trip and read on the bus! I NEVER do that. Makay is very well written. She has been through more terrible stuff in her young life than anyone should ever have to face, and has a screwed up life because of it. But she does everything she can to be a good parent to her younger brother and part of that is rising above her past. Lenny, a totally manipulative creep, took advantage of Makay's desperation as a young girl (not in a physical way) and refuses to let her go. Add Harrison, Makay's love interest but also Lenny's victim, and the plot thickens. The author does a great job of making the reader care about Makay and her brother and the outcome of this twisting, turning, heart-pounding, stress-inducing romantic drama. (Clean: no foul language or sex.)
Can you imagine having to try to survive from the time you are a teenager? Finding a place to sleep at night, trying to feed yourself, clothe yourself, all while trying to survive high school? Now imagine taking care of a baby brother on top of everything. Life is not easy for Makay, but somehow she has made it work. It has not been easy, and not everything she has done has been ethical, but when you are young and trying to find your way, sometimes evil people find a way to take advantage of you.
This was such a interesting premise for a book, it was so interesting. I had no idea where it was headed and had me guessing the whole time. I really loved it! I hope that Rachel Branton keeps up this fantastic series.
I love this series. To me, it seems like each book gets better and better. The story this time was a little hard for me to follow at first but the more I read, the more I understood it. The only problem that I had with this was that in the first book when we are introduced to Makay, none of the details of her backstory were mentioned. We knew the story about her brother and her but not about what she had to do to survive. Other than that, I loved this one!!
Another awesome book! You fall in love with these characters. How could you not love Michaela who takes care of her baby brother Nate and her love interest Harrison who saves her from all the drama/trama of her childhood
This story has twists and turns and shows such a believable side of something that could in essence really happen. Another wonderful wonderful novel to read.
I highly recommend reading all the books in the series as each one has more twists and turns and the next and I was so compelling and heart wrenching at the same time.
Miss Braxton is a wonderful novelist/author and I hope and pray that she continues to write more and more for my fulfillment if her no one else's as I have truly found a fabulous writer in her.
I've read several of Ms Branton's stories & I've really enjoyed every one. This one keeps your interest from start to finish. I liked the integrity of the characters & how she brought people from different walks of life & intermixed them. There are some pretty rotten people out there, who who selfishly take advantage of others. But there are also a lot of others, despite their circumstances, are people of greatness & integrity.
