Dr Fung makes his points succinctly and with well reasoned support. At the end of reading this book I wept a little because I have spent my entire life following the eat less move more diet without success. I have felt like a failure my entire life because I was unable to lose weight and keep it off following such a simple edict. I have started doing intermittent fasting and so far am losing weight, see how I go in six months and this book could be defined as life changing.
This book I needed to read a decade ago...have counted calories for 50 years and points and been to all diet clinics too...this is so easy to understand and so easy to do....IF is wonderful and I am doing well with it and my weight is moving....Dr Fung explains it all simply and my first weight lose came by just giving up sweetners.......just suddenly being told they raise insulin levels was the first step and been upward every since....if you are really over dieting and counting the calories or buying prepared diet food etc, this is the book for you....
I read this directly after reading “Wheat Belly” by cardiologist William Davis. However, whilst I thought that book presented a good case, on occasion Dr Davis did seem to reach a bit with his hypothesis (although he tended to qualify his statements when he did) and it was clear there was more to the diabesity epidemic than his analysis allowed.
This is quite different to the experience I had reading this book, which is far more heavily cited, more holistic and presented with a compelling multi-dimensional logic that is hard to deny.
Whilst I’m personally quite healthy, I recently trialled a 5 day fast to test the claims of this book and I can attest that after about day 2 I had started to feel ok, and by days 4 and 5 I was feeling positively fantastic. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever been quite so productive and enthusiastic at work.
I have an extensive library of weight management advice books but this is the most logical and useful reference I have read. Following this type of advice I have successfully lost 65kg (yes, sixty five kilo) and maintained a reasonable weight for over four years. Wish I had found this book years ago!
Jason Fung has written a logically sequenced, easy to read book. His arguments are well supported with quality, peer reviewed research. I would recommend this book to anyone struggling with obesity, insulin resistance or any of the myriad of health issues related to inflammation in the body. I would also strongly recommend this book to dieticians, nutritionists, diabetes educators, diabetes nurses and associated health professionals. Not for its easy to read format, but for the quality and up-to-date research that some (many?) health professionals appear to unaware of. I would love see to nutritional guidelines reflect the research that is so readily available.
This book (and Dr Fung's subsequent articles on intermittent fasting) has been an absolute revelation for me. I too have been totally focused on calories in, calories out and never fully understood the effect different foods and food timing has had on my weight. An absolute must read for anyone looking at weight control or working with clients who are looking for weight loss. Intermittent fasting has been an amazing eating manipulation method for me personally. I have lost more weight in the past 6-months using this method than in the last 6-years of training in the gym 5-days per week.
I learnt a lot from this book. It as very indepth, maybe too much in some parts. I started to waver at the half way mark and went looking for one page that would tell me what I had to do. However I then went back to reading it as a whole, so I could understand The reasoning behind the recommendations.
