I have read the 10th anniversary edition. I bought the book to get an understanding of football tactics. The book didn't particularly help me in that regard. I found the writing confused and difficult to follow. The work is not so much a history of football tactics as a succession of facts arranged first by country, then by manager and/or team, then by games of note. As a result, the book's narrative jumps around both chronologically and geographically. Moreover, the book is replete with the minutest of details about coaches, players and games. However, those details, for the most part, do not serve any purpose in explaining tactics or their evolution. While the author does state what changes were made by a team or coach to their play, too often why that change was of benefit is left as an exercise for the reader - moreso in the earlier part of the book than towards the end. If you are looking for a survey of great teams and managers in football history, along with well researched, interesting details then you may enjoy this book. I would not recommend it for a student of football tactics.
