So this was the first Leigh Bardugo book I’ve read. I’m not sure why, all of the others are on my book shelves and are definitely ‘want to read’, but there was just always another one that took priority!
So....I had no preconceived ideas about this one going in, other than all of the glowing reviews I’d read about the author and this book in particular. And I enjoyed it and I’d definitely read the next one, especially as Darlington is probably my favourite character. But.
1. It took me a long time to read, mainly because I found it hard going through the first half and so wasn’t completely engaged in the story.
2. It was a real ‘information dump’ at the start in setting the scene, and not enough character building and back stories to support that and keep me emotionally invested.
3. I get all the triggers, but I really didn’t read it as adult fantasy.
All of that aside, I would still recommend, but not as one of my faves.
