This book lives up to the old adage “you never forget your first love”. It proves that life often takes you down different roads and first loves rarely work out.... But what if you were given a second chance? One of my favourite author's Jennifer Weiner provides us with an emotionally charged, wonderful story. You will cry, you gasp, you will want to throw your Kindle (as did I) but mostly you will feel... In it we meet Rachel Blum and Andy Landis, total opposites, who meet as children in a hospital ward and probably don't expect to meet again. Yet they do meet again as teenagers and fall in love. Living in different states they stay in touch through phone calls and letters. During college, Andy would visit Rachel when he had free time. Then one day everything fell apart. The rest of the book focuses on their lives as individuals. Along the way there is new love, children, careers and a big mistake that is made - (it will take your breath away). And just when they both think they have hit their lowest point, there is a glimmer of hope. The plot has been done before (young boy meets young girl, they fall in love, they grow up, fall apart, reconcile, fall apart, etc.) but something about this book was so real, so filled with love and longing, good and bad choices that are weirdly understandable, and always that ultimate thing we never let go of.. hope. I loved that they were so opposite in every way... Andy is bi-racial, grew up with a single mother who struggled to make ends meet. Rachel was a spoilt white rich girl. They both had different goals in life. They both had different religious beliefs. Andy got in fights and in trouble and Rachel was the good girl yet when they were together, none of that mattered. They brought out the best in each other. This to me is what makes it a 5 star novel. Jennifer Weiner captures the truth & reality of life and love in "Who Do You Love?" beautifully, characters, flaws and all.
