Mysteries don't come much better than this
21 August 2018
Moving at a leisurely pace that allowed me to consider motives and the effects that a harsh climate and isolation can have on its inhabitants, I found myself totally absorbed in this novel. The juxtaposition of the lives of modern Shetlanders and the almost gothic- horror existence of Magnus Tait forms the core of the novel with Shetland itself becoming a character in its own right. So much lies hidden, and all is not what it seems on the island until an outsider, Jimmy Perez uncovers the bitter truth.
Cleeves is a beautiful writer who slowy weaves a spell on her readers and leaves them wanting more. If this is the first of the Shetland series you read, it won't be the last.
