TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY-FOUR ?

I read this book over thirty years ago and have had many an Orwellian moment since. The increasing use of CCTV around the globe, revelations about intelligence agencies hacking smart TV's and computer webcams plus the retention and monitoring of citizens Meta Data ( justified in Government 'Newspeak' " as keeping us safe") and the ongoing and never ending conflicts around the world just show how insightful Orwell was. Reading this story again has underlined to me how relevant Orwell's novel still is today.

One of the top books you must read in your lifetime... no thanks

I have always seen this book around forums or sites in general when looking for a book to read and the "top 100 books to read in your lifetime" etc. I sadly could not get into the book, it wasn't for the writing or how it was written it was just a bit over the top and went straight over my head at some points. Something I'd be happy to skip. I thought the concept was interesting but it took me a long time to read because I wasn't really into the book as I'd like to.

I have never read 1984 before now! What a bold, insightful, scary view of what could be. And George wrote this back in the 40's! If only he could see how many aspects of the big brother disease has infiltrated our world. He would say "it was a warning, not an instruction manual" (I pinched that line from a FB post I saw a few weeks ago that prompted me to read this). Now will read Animal Farm. XxJ

It made feel very angry to realize that much of what was written in book 50 yesrs ago, is the current reality in many societies. Imagination is very powerful, we should use to imagine a better world.

Loved the book. Orwell built the scene magnificently and allowed the reader to be engulfed in the world of Oceania and all that entails. The conclusion is a reminder to people everywhere of the folly of blind faith in authority. Beautiful read. You keep forgetting the book being published in 1949.

This book really makes you think. Winston is a complex and intriguing character. Orwell builds a fascinating sense of society.

I chose to download "1984" as I had not read it previously and it was about to be presented professionally as the Play at a local theatre. I cannot say much more other than I enjoyed the read.
This was the first book that I have read on my new Kindle and I was quite surprised at the number of "typo's". I had thought that these books would have been scanned from original copy but it appears as though they are re-keyed. The "typo's" were mainly spelling mistakes so it did not become much of a problem.

An absolute classic. Thought provoking, riveting and very unsettling. I could read this again and again.

Hard to believe this was written in 1949 but so relevant to today...the discussion on on going war reflects the atrocious state we have had since the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq....beautiful book but so sad...so much control

George Orwell.,. he knew what was install for us all, NSA possibly even modeled a system to this style of living!? well, its hard to not make a connection.
Love the tense 'on edge' unfolding, whilst remaining easy to read, a great writer.
Characters are real life styled, they conform to a normal person, nothing super hero etc. described scenes are clear adn wonderfully crisp.
But.. of course I have to write this, a 'Telescreen' is always in earshot..
