The authors have written one of the most comprehensive and in-depth study of strength training I have ever read.
The science behind the need for strength training was introduced, and explained in a way that the layman could follow and comprehend.
The choice for barbell training was explained based upon human biological factors. The choice of exercises was based upon the science and which exercises would give the most benefit for the effort exerted.
Basically the authors chose four core barbell exercises, a few complimentary strength exercises and a once a week HIIT workout as being the ideal prescription to train against aging and its detrimental effects.
With these few exercises we 'masters' (although I think this programme will work as well for my 15 year old son as for myself) will become strong, fit and healthy enough to tackle life.
