less action than is usual. much more analysis of social correctness in Venetian society.

Although Donna Leon has always included an interesting insight into the thought processes of Venetians, this aspect of her novels has overwhelmed this story so that little 'action" is discernable. I have found it more difficult than usual to enjoy this book. It remains an interesting exposure of the thought processes of upper class Venetians but, for me, would have been more interesting if the inter-personal difficulties described had been resolved earlier.
