GONE GIRL...COMPELLING READING
28 April 2016
I can't say, I loved Gone Girl, but I can say it was compelling reading. Initially, it was hard going and I was in two minds about pressing on, but I'm glad I did.
The first half-ish of the narrative was dramatic, painful and intense. It included confronting revelations and backstories. Mystery built and built!
By the second halfish I was questioning the direction of my earlier thoughts as the narrative settled in to gradually unpacking the real motives, clues and truths. No spoilers, but until the climax and conclusion, I was still unsure, still guessing.
The book was about many things - contemporary social issues, twisted love, the power of the media etc. It was written in an edgy, kind of abrupt way, with a strong plot, good character development (unlikable as they were), excellent dialogue, powerful exposition and a rythmic flow.
Gillian Flynn is certainly an excellent story teller and this novel is a real page turner. Highly recommended, although it won't be everyone's cup of tea.
