This series just keeps getting better

I really enjoyed this and, given the hook at the end, I am very glad I read these after the publication of book four. The development of Cormoran and Robin's relationship has been the draw card for me with this series, however, I think the mysteries have also gotten better / more dynamic and complex. This one was unique, intriguing, moved along at a decent pace and came to a satisfying conclusion.

What a shame

I don't know which is worse: the utter savagery towards women and girls of all ages - pedophilia, incest, butchery, rape, mutilation - or the author's obvious revelling in it. JK Rowling is one sick puppy. Such a shame, as Strike and Robin are such an interesting team and the first 2 stories were really cleverly crafted puzzles. Sigh.

He's a chain smoking virtual alcoholic and she's a semi anorexic who can't stop crying. Together they fight crime in the Great Wen. The result is a highly diverting page turner, which is no small praise for the author. Part of their problem is that while they are obviously made for each other, circumstances and authorial intervention keep them apart. Their relationship provides most of the tension in this story, as the plot, while serviceable, is a bit creaky and the denouement especially so.

Don't want to be too critical because this is still a great read, especially for someone who loves London and appreciates the Cook's tour provided by this book. One query though: Robin seems to encounter low level sexual harassment wherever she goes. She only has to sit down in a pub for five minutes before some creep tries to come on to her. In one bit she walks past a gang of workmen who whistle and make lewd remarks. The last time I saw anyone wolf whistle a woman in the street was about 1970. I don't believe that this level of behaviour is at all common these days (but I am an old bloke so I could be wrong).
Anyway, suffice to say I can't wait for the next episode in which I hope Robin and Strike get together and she cuts down his drinking, stops his smoking and makes him eat something healthy and he gets her to eat more and be happier. I suppose this would signal the end of the series, though, and we don't want that to happen yet.

One more thing I like about this book is the total absence of firearms. OK there are some horrible episodes involving knives but at least the Poms don't seem to be half in love with easeful death as delivered through the barrel of a Smith and Wesson .38 as do the Americans - I had to stop watching Fargo because of this sick infatuation with guns and shooting people.

What delightfully complex character's this author writes about. My mind went back and forth over who dunnit. Kept me guessing right to the end. I look forward to more on Rose and Strikes developing partnership. Cannot wait for the next one.

I've loved this series but, with this 3rd book, I wasn't sure I wanted to finish yet another detective story about a serial killer stalking/maiming/murdering women. BUT I'M GLAD I DID. This 'Robert Galbraith' series features Cormoran Strike, a burley returning war veteran amputee (Afghanistan) who has set up his own Private Detective Agency. In the first book, he advertised for part-time secretarial help to type, file and answer phones. Robin Elliott (soon-to-be-married university graduate) applied, thinking it was short-term. Turns out her organisational skills and adept lateral problem-solving talents are excellent complements to Cormoran's. Her responsibilities have grown, both enjoy working together and their developing working relationship is the best part of these books. It's exciting to read stories about a man and a woman who have no romantic interest in each other (both have dramatically separate private lives) but who share strong respect, regard and affection for each other's professional skills and intelligence.

I thought the other two were good, but this story was exceptionally good. I was engaged from the first page until the last. The story was a roller coaster ride of tense action and detective work. The characters' relationships travelled by thought and action through a maze that never left the reader knowing exactly where it was all going to end. The unexpected twist of deception at the end ensures that I will re-read it again, but with full insight as to the killer's identity. Very satisfying. Well done, Robert Galbraith!

I read these books in order, so this being the final one, the main characters are like old acquaintances. Apart from the fast moving and gripping crime story, there are also titillating subplots that keep you guessing and changing your mind. You never manage to second guess outcomes. This series was recommended to me by a friend and I would recommend it to people who want a quality read that is hard to put down.

It seemed to take ages to get going as if the author hadn't quite worked out the planning. At about 40%through and on the verge of tossing it, the pace picked up and was then quite enjoyable. Not sure about reading another Strike book tho '.
