This isn't only an Irish shame - this is Australia's too
22 December 2015
In Australia we are enduring the Royal Commission into Institutional Sexual Abuse of various religious - but overwhelmingly of the Catholic Church - and its paedophile priests and brothers - and the Cardinal who was called to Rome - the one who spent $30 million fancying up his little palace in Rome he calls "Domus" and who is now too sick - blood pressure or something - to return to Australia to face the questions only he must answer! This book by John Boyne teases out all the reasons why it's time for these monsters to have their institutions disbanded. This is a harrowing book - mostly because it charts the ethical dilemma - of not seeing, of not wishing to see, of denial that one can or should have seen - that one was not doing what one should have been doing. Let me come clean here - when I was eleven I had my innocence destroyed within the umbrella of a church - a Protestant - a fundamentalist Protestant church - but no less terrible for not being Catholic. Thank-you John for articulating so much if what I have been dealing with in the more than half-a-century since.
